Our Portfolio Of Websites

Our portfolio is constantly growing!
Here's some examples of our latest work. These sites are just the tip of the iceberg.

Author, Gillian Taber

"Ah, excellent! It's very 'me'. Thanks for putting up with all my requests for changes and for doing a great job!"
- Gill

Gill needed a personal website on which she could advertise her recently-published books.

I designed and created this site with a lot of input from her. It contains the details of all her published books as well as being home to the unpublished stories she has written. Within the first few days of it becoming live, she began writing on the blog animatedly.

Developing this site was interesting since I got to read some of her work as I put it on the site. It was also a challenge, getting the design to suit her preferences - but here we have a satisfied customer :)

Gimme A Hand!

"Gimme A Hand!" is a website developed for a database Owain is trying to create, of people's hands. Sounds weird, but it's very useful for Augmented Reality: you can use these images to train algorithms to detect gestures on webcams.

The site's designed to be eyecatching and easily navigable so that we can maximise the number of submissions to the data from our visitors.

Forest Of Dean Allotments

The Forest Of Dean Allotment Association needed a simple and concise site which states clearly what they do.

"Very easy to browse."
"I've just edited the constitution page. Cor! This is easy!"
- Members of the FODAA

As they are essentially a non-profit organization they wanted to keep hosting costs down, so the site is designed to avoid meeting the limits of free hosting, through page-loading techniques such as AJAX.

The site was also designed to be easily maintained and modified by its members - pages can be edited on-site in a WYSIWYG editor.

The site took roughly 2 days to design, and is an example of what Slashing Edge does without being paid (one of the FODAA members being Owain's father).

Owain Jones - Photography Portfolio

Owain needed a portfolio for his A-Level Photography course. He decided to deviate from the typical sketch-book and powerpoint portfolio and make an online portfolio instead, noticing that a lot of professional photographers have an online presence nowadays.

"It looks very slick and professional."
- Mr L. Jarvis (Teacher)

The portfolio needed a layout which was easy to follow, with a good way of presenting photos.

The portfolio also employs the use of AJAX page loading, making it faster to navigate, coupled with smooth animations.

Slashing Edge Forums

The Slashing Edge Forums are an ongoing project.

We wanted to create a forum software which could serve lots of people from a relatively small server by minimizing the amount of bandwidth used.

So we created a 'Fat-client, thin-server' software, where the server sends pure JSON-encoded data, formatted into HTML by client's browsers. The browser also stores data unlikely to change (such as information on users such as their names and dates of birth) to reduce the number of queries needed.

Most of the code has been written from scratch by us, so it has taken us a while to get to the level of a functional discussion board - however, important functions (viewing/creating posts and threads) have been implemented, and we're working on Mk.II now we know our idea works.

Bargain Luxury

'Bargain Luxury' is an unused site design Owain has worked on - just an example of the work we do.

The name 'Bargain Luxury' doesn't really have any connotation; I was looking for an upmarket sort of design, with deep blues and so forth, but the (placeholder) header and footer look like... well, chipboard. Stark contrast. It seems to fit, though.
